Seems as if the guy I got the Golf R from runs a full fledged Turo business. There must have been at least six other cars on the property when I dropped the VW off. Did not expect to see this available for rental though.
Night sight working it’s magic
Might have to give this business venture some more thought, but props to this guy for making it work while offering legitimately nice cars.

I find it so hard to separate my love for the cars with how people will treat them.

Same here, there would have to be a distinction between personal cars and cars for rent. That’s why I found the Mustang so surprising, that thing isn’t so easily replaceable but maybe it rakes in money...

I mean, it’s not like it’s hard to find classic Mustangs for sale. I don’t know my Mustangs well enough to say if this is a particularly special model, but most of the ‘60s Mustangs you see are going to be less expensive than a good number of modern used cars.
If you owned one as a personal treasure, sure you wouldn’t want to be loaning it out to random strangers, but if you bought it to rent and someone wrecks it, you just take your insurance payment and buy another.

I’ll admit I’m not up to date on the classic Mustang market, just assumed it was desirable due to the somewhat- niche fleet but maybe that's what all the renters think too

I mean, obviously it’s cool. But just looking at cars for sale, I’d guess it might be a $30,000 car (+ /- $10,000) . Certainly interesting, and not something most renters are going to have a chance to drive normally, but (again barring it being some super special variant), it doesn’t seem like it’s anything particularly valuable or irreplaceable. Ford made around 1.3M Mustangs before the ‘67 refresh, and while many have gone to the crusher, even a small percentage of survivors means a lot of cars around.

OK, how much for the Mustang?

Just checked it out, 99 /day before fees and insurance. Also some limitations I’ve never seen before, speed is maxed to 50 mph and have to be at least 30 yea rs young to rent it.

How does insurance work on Turo ? I’ve heard people say that everything is fine till it isn’t.
BTW, I replied to your email.

Thankfully, I’ve never had to use it but they give you three options. Decline coverage , basic , and premium with different levels of deductibles and limits . The liability side is through Liberty Mutual. However, the physical damage coverage is handled by a smaller broker, Picasso Insurance, which is where I think the complications possibly arise if you’re trying to get the car fixed.
Thanks! I'll check it when I'm back home, don't have that account set up on my phone lol.

Gotcha. I think the physical damage coverage is a bit weird. What happens if something breaks on the car when its no one’s fault? Like say a HID unit goes out on a new car when it is rented out and its out of warranty. Who pays the $1000ish for that? It could get murky...
Also, i s Turo registered to be a rental car company?

Murky indeed! I'd guess you'd be SOL..
They are not considered a rental car company. My personal coverage as well as my credit card protection do not extend to Turo.

Yeah, that's why I dont wanna get a car from turo. It's feels too risky to me.

Luckily, I haven’t had any issues at all. Seems like most folks just want another income stream when the car would sit otherwise. I usually use it to get a car with a bike rack, but glad I went for the Golf R on this trip.
There’s a guy local to me that offers an Auto C7 for 150/day and it's always being rented.

I once considered getting a vehicle for Turo, one that should rent enou gh to cover the payment, but that I could use when it wasn’t rented. I was considering a 997 S. At the time they did not cover dents or scratches under 4 inches in size. That sc ared me away as I imagined the types of venues people would be parking such a vehicle at. Bars, spo rting even ts, etc. I could just imagine what it might look like after a year.

Yeah definitely have to take the area you live in into consideration as well . I’m considering a well depreciated C7. Two rentals a month would cover the payment. And it would be fun for me to enjoy even if it was an auto. One guy here in AZ has a fleet of Porsches! He must be connected to a dealer or something lol

I find the idea of being a Turo entrepreneur appealing as well.
Though I’m not sure which would be the better approach... have some classic cars that nobody else is offering in a given area, or having something modern-interesting, or having something modern-mainstream.

From what I’ve seen , the sweet spot is an auto C7. Can make your monthly payment with only 2-3 days of renting . Model 3s were raking in money hand over fist when they first came out too .
I think the key is, w ith any Turo car, you can’t be too attached, it should be cheap to maintain, and you have to be willing to fight claims tooth and nail.

“and you have to be willing to fight claims tooth and nail.”
Fight claims tooth and nail? What do you mean? Are you saying the insurance offered through Turo is basically shit?

This is only from what I read, as I haven’t had any negative experiences with Turo myself. B ut I’ve heard enough bad things, that I would take extra precaution when renting out a sports car. If it was something of lesser value, I probably wouldn’t care as much.

Speed maxed to 50 mph?!?
